This contest is OPEN for:
All 12 subcategories of Photography > Photojournalism and everyone on deviantART (except staffs and admins either paid or volunteer).

This contest will run from 0001hrs May 1st through 2359hrs August 31st, 2009. [EST]

The DeviantART Photojournalism Award of the Year 2009 (DPAY09) competition's objective is to showcase the ability of putting art into photojournalism. Conceptually similar to World Press Photo of the Year award, the DPAY09 will showcase only artworks done throughout the deviantART community under the umbrella of the Photojournalism Gallery. This also creates awareness over this particular gallery, and how it impacts the community if not the media/press as a whole.

Open for ALL worldwide, (excluding CR, MN@, HD, CEA, and HQ) throughout the duration of this contest, DPAY09 will focus on each subcategory of deviantART's Photojournalism galleries. The nominees will include each of the best for all twelve subcategories, and the final winner(s) will be the overall photograph that would be best-of-the-best amongst all the subcategories.

Week 1 September: Both PJ GM (evanhwong and Helewidis will open judging to the community for top 6 Finalists.

Week 2 September: GM/MN@/$ will judge for final top 3 winners.

Week 3 September: Announcement of Winners by September 14th, 2009!!

_{On Week 1 of September, a compilation of each Top 3 photographs per subgallery will be showcased based on collective voting by PJ Moderators to be judged by the community based on a Polling system. At the end of Week 1, each top subgallery nominees will be handed over to Community Relations Gallery Moderators (GM), Message Network Administrators (MN@), and Staffers ($) for final round of judging. By the end of Week 2, both PJ GM will tabulate the numbers of votes from GM, MN@, and $, to decide on the final winners.}

As this contest runs throughout the entire subgalleries of Photojournalism, there will be a specific theme open for "interpretation". We chose a thematic that is vague enough to fit any of the Photojournalism subcategories in dA yet still being within the essence of what Photojournalism is about: LIFE.

Photography submissions must be made to the DPAY09 Contest only. To submit your works, go to Submit Deviation > Contests > LIFE.

During submission, each member must place the correct subcategory description to their works, for instance in the Artist Comment, write "Photojournalism > Natural Events" and followed by captions that relate to the photograph. All submission MUST be newsworthy, so the deviant must provide info on what happened there, like a link to a news article online, etc...

All photographs must be either digital or film format and follows specific deviantART deviation submission rules. No cameraphone pictures allowed. No heavy manipulations allowed of any kind. Only minor cropping, dodging, burning, framing etc that would not distort the photograph greatly will be allowed.  In the event that a photograph is suspected of violating the rules upon investigation and verification by judges, the artist will automatically be disqualified for the entirety of the contest with or without notice.

Winners will be judged on the relevancy to the subcategory they submit in, the look and feel, and how newsworthy their works are. Composition is key, and how much each photograph tells more story to the viewer rather than letting the viewer read the description given. Grand Prize Winner will be judged based on the impact the photograph brings forth amongst all the other nominees.

Photographs that have been awarded Daily Deviations are not allowed for this contest. Your photographs should be taken during the periods of May 2008 through August 2009 and must come with the EXIF data for digital, or a mini editorial for film formats.

Winners will be informed via News Article, Journal Features, and Note. We will be in touch with the winners with regards to their addresses so we can send the presents over via courier.
